Atelier Levend Glas and more
I currently work primarily with glass fusing, often using recycled glass combined with repurposed materials. My glass kiln is powered by solar energy. My inspiration comes mainly from my imagination; I am a visual thinker who starts with a blank slate and keeps working until I am satisfied. I only realize what I am creating—and why—once the piece is right in front of me; with glass fusing, the result isn't visible until after the firing process, which can be a bit of a limitation. That explains my occasional forays into painting and pen-and-ink drawings.
The pen-and-ink drawings emerged as a response to the technical nature of glass work and fusing. Using a pen allows for immediate results, and this led to the gradual creation of fairy tale-like drawings, often featuring birds as the main characters. These birds possess their own distinct personalities and ideas, and are rendered in detail using a very fine-tipped Rotring pen.
The paintings—created in an abstract-figurative style—arose in turn as a reaction to the intricate black-and-white pen drawings. Working with color and broader, more expressive strokes feels wonderful and incredibly liberating. Here, too, I start with nothing and simply follow where my intuition leads me.
